Save fuel with Solar Diesel Hybrid Systems

Save money with photovoltaics & diesel generators

In combination, diesel generators and photovoltaic systems are very well suited to energy supply in areas with an unstable or non-existent mains supply. The additional use of solar energy reduces fuel consumption, which saves costs. Furthermore, the integration of a PV system brings a sustainable factor into the system.

Advantages of solar diesel hybrid systems

  • Reduce diesel costs – Solar power is much cheaper and more predictable in the long term than power generated by diesel generators.
  • Quick ROI – Due to the high savings potential, the investment in a photovoltaic system pays for itself after a short time.
  • Reduce CO2 footprint – Generating solar power reduces your carbon footprint.

Save fuel and reduce energy costs

Fuel costs make up the largest part of the cost of producing electricity using diesel generators. Depending on the geographical location, oil prices of up to €2.5 per kWh can be expected. This shows no sign of abating.

The price trend in the photovoltaics sector is much more positive. Over the past few years, the costs per kWh from PV systems have dropped to an average of €0.10 per kWh around the globe.

For this reason, there is a clear financial justification for converting almost every diesel-powered system into a solar/diesel hybrid system. Every unused diesel kWh saves money.

An investment that pays off quickly

The combination of diesel generators with PV systems quickly pays for itself through the large savings in fuel costs.

Intelligent technology ensures optimum interaction between the photovoltaic system and the diesel generator. This guarantees that as much solar energy as possible is used and that the diesel generator operates at various degrees of utilisation at the most advantageous operating points.

How a solar diesel hybrid system works
Photovoltaic modules Modules can be mounted on large roofs or in open spaces and generate solar power when exposed to the sun. This electricity must be converted from direct current to alternating current before it can be used. The inverter is responsible for this.
1
Inverter The inverter is the control centre of every photovoltaic system. It converts the generated direct current into alternating current and provides the self-contained network (MicroGrid) with as much solar power as possible.
2
PV system controller The Fronius PV System Controller measures all energy flows in the PV/diesel system, enabling it to control the photovoltaic power in the most optimum manner.
3
Diesel generator The diesel generator is the primary energy source for solar/diesel hybrid systems. The more solar power can be generated, the lower the fuel costs.
4
Loads The loads are supplied with a mix of solar energy and fossil energy through the combination of a diesel generator and photovoltaic system.
5
Current sensors The current sensors are connected to the PV system controller and measure the power in the system.
6
Backup feedback contact The feedback contact (grid supply) facilitates the operation of the photovoltaic system – optimally adapted to any energy fed into the grid or parallel generator events.
7
Grid A connection to the grid can be available at least temporarily.

Reduction of diesel costs through the use of photovoltaic energy

„During the day, the owners of the tobacco factory are able to cover a large proportion of their energy requirements with solar power, both in the high and the low season. If less tobacco is produced, the farm feeds more energy into the grid. The owner thereby has an additional source of income and becomes a „power farmer“. He uses less diesel and saves thousands of euros annually. Thanks to these savings, the system will have paid for itself within a few years.“
